Fish tanks have long been appreciated for their beauty and the interest they add to a room. But beyond aesthetics, fish tanks can serve another meaningful purpose, which is to positively impact mental health and overall feelings of well-being. Through scientific research, fish tanks have been found to be particularly helpful in reducing symptoms of anxiety and stress.
The Bond Between Humans and Animals
Humans and animals have been deeply bonded for thousands of years, so it comes as no surprise that many households today are shared with a variety of types of animals. Across the U.S., dogs, cats, and freshwater fish are the most popular pet choices. More than 65 million households have welcomed dogs into their lives, while nearly 47 million share their homes with cats. Following our four-legged companions are freshwater fish, which can be found in more than 11 million households, nationwide. (Forbes Advisor, 2023)
Fish tanks promote mental well-being through their calming effect...

Why are we so fond of animals? Simply put, it’s because it feels good to be around them. Extensive research has been conducted to examine the health benefits associated with owning pets or receiving animal-assisted therapy. Results have shown that positive interactions with animals can result in increased mental well-being, and even improved physiological health in some cases. The Human Animal Bond Research Institute notes that awareness about the health benefits of human-animal bonds is ever-growing, and a recent survey reports that 22% of pet owners have had a pet recommended by a physician or therapist.
Fish Tank Popularity
One of the primary ways fish tanks promote mental well-being is through their calming effect. The
combination of the gentle movement, vibrant colors, and the meditative aspect of observing fish can help quiet the mind and promote mindfulness. This can be especially beneficial for individuals with anxiety disorders or those experiencing high levels of stress.
When considering pet options, there are many benefits to choosing fish. Compared to other animals, fish
are relatively low maintenance, and an ideal choice for those with limited time or space. Big or small,
elaborate or simple, a fish tank can easily be scaled to suit any preferences.
Fish tanks offer far more than just visual appeal. The calming effect of observing fish, the connection to
nature, the sense of responsibility, and the reduction of anxiety all contribute to the positive impact on
mental health. Incorporating a fish tank into your living or working space can bring a sense of tranquility,
balance, and joy, supporting your mental well-being and promoting a healthier life.
